Adult Stem Cells Repair Damaged Heart Muscle

The story of how James Eilert had his heart muscle repaired after Vescell stem cell treatment is becoming widely known on the internet . Therefore, I wanted to update his story to check up on James and see how he is doing.

In this new stem cell treatment story, we cover James on how he was before coming to Bangkok for the Vescell therapy in November 2007:

The damaged heart left James fatigued, exhausted and short of breath. It was increasingly difficult to meet the demands of his job as an automotive engineer. He was gasping for breath and sweating all the time. His ejection fraction (EF) had sunk to 20-25%. Feeling depressed, James had given up hope of ever improving his quality of life.

James had his own Adult Stem Cells implanted on November 14, 2007 in Bangkok. They were implanted using a simple catheter- the procedure being similar to an angioplasty.

The stem cells had an amazing effect on James. Almost immediately, he started feeling better (Note- normally it takes 4-6 weeks).

If You Have A Heart Attack, Dial 911, Don't Drive To The ER

The title says it all. However, it should be repeated- if you are having a heart attack, dial 911, don't drive to the hospital.

Now, you may be thinking to yourself- "why is that? If my spouse drives me to the hospital or if I drive myself, that must be quicker than waiting for the ambulance to come and pick me up and then take me to the hospital."

Well, you may get to the hospital slightly faster (or you may not due to traffic), but you will not get treatment faster- and they did a study to back that up:

He said people who come to hospital under their own steam can run into numerous delays -- including traffic jams, difficulty finding the ER, lineups once they arrive and the time it takes to be assessed by a triage nurse.

"We did see that people who came in by self (transport), their time to treatment was much longer," he said of the study.

Calling 911 means quicker treatment because paramedics are trained to recognize heart attack symptoms, can begin basic treatment and call ahead, "so the emergency room is prepared and they drive you directly and you're there," Natarajan said.

And we all know that the longer it takes to begin treatment for a heart attack, the more dying heart tissue. In some cases, a delay in treatment can cost a heart attack victim their life.

And these days, many ambulances and the paramedics are equipped to perform an electrocardiogram (ECG) on the patient to determine if they are indeed having a heart attack. A study has shown that being given an ECG in the field (before the hospital) can save 30 minutes of treatment at the hospital- 30 minutes that can save a life or save a patient from major heart muscle damage.

So my advice is if you are having a heart attack, don't be a tough guy/gal, don't be a hero- just call 911 and wait for the ambulance to come. We have all seen the bad movies where the pregnant woman is having her baby and she and the frantic husband get into the taxi and tell the driver to "step on it." However, we have to get that image out of our head- call 911 and wait.

Here are some classic heart attack warning signs from the American Heart Association:

• Chest discomfort. Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or that goes away and comes back. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain.
• Discomfort in other areas of the upper body. Symptoms can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach.
• Shortness of breath with or without chest discomfort.
• Other signs may include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness

Those can apply to men and women, but you can since women sometimes have slightly different symptoms of a heart attack, here you can find a list of women heart attack symptoms

Use of Stem Cells for Heart Repair: The James Eilert Story

One of the big questions in the field of stem cell treatment for heart disease is "Are there any positive heart muscle health aspects of using adult stem cells for the heart?" Or, more simply put, can stem cells help a damaged heart?

Well, yes, we do believe and today I give you Exhibit A- James Eilert. James, 34 and overweight became one of the young victims of the heart disease epidemic in the United States (and elsewhere). James had a major heart attack in his "widow maker" artery. Well, recently, James wrote us a letter detailing his story since his heart attack, I'll just let him tell you. Here are some excerpts from James' letter:

I would like to thank you for starting up the Theravitae company, if it wasn't for that treatment I would be much worse off than I am today!
I would also like to thank Dr Thein Htut and Dr Barbara Czerska for their work in fixing me up.
But most of all I would like to thank my friends Pete and Rhonda Voelzke who loaned me the money - they truly saved my life!

Here is my story,

In Jan 2006, when I was 34 years old I had a "widowmaker" , 100
percent blockage of the left ascending coronary artery. My ejection fraction (EF)was between 20 and 25 percent and I was told that I had about 5 years left.

I still kept working 45 - 50 hours a week, but it was getting very difficult. I didn't want to die but figured it would be better than living like this. No hope and a relatively short, sucky life.

This was when James found the VesCell website along with Dr. Czerska's name on it. Already a patient at Henry Ford Clinic where Dr. Czerska was the Director of Heart Transplantation, James switched cardiologists and prepared for VesCell adult stem cell therapy.

In November 2007, James was treated via catheter at Phyathai 2 Hospital by Dr. Damras Tresukosol,using his own adult stem cells. Back to James:

1 1/2 weeks after I had an echo done and the completely dead apex was
beating again - verrrrry weakly but it was moving.

6 months later- my sidewalls are now beating normally, my septum went from 100%
damage to 30% damage. Dr. Czerska says my heart is 50 percent more elastic than the year before adult stem cell therapy

Some additions - after 6 months -
My total dead heart tissue is down to about 10 percent - and my EF is up to 50 percent!


I want to be able to do a 10 minute mile (6mph) I really think it is so cool that the first two rehabs after my MI it took almost a 1 1/2 - 2 months to be able to jog at 5mph for 20 minutes. I am almost there now and I have been doing it for a week and a half!

It is also nice to not be gasping for breathe as I am doing this.

I have had no weight swings up or down, at the end of the first week i had lost 2lbs - 1/2" off my waist and this has held steady.

If i can get rid of this extra 50 lbs in the next 6 months i am sure i will probably feel much better.
